ASTS believes that there is no substitute for aggressive supervisor intervention in instances of observed behavior that create a potential unsafe work environment. It is crucial that supervisors take an active part in the recognition of the problem and utilize intervention techniques. ASTS offers supervisor’s training seminars to create a better awareness of the potential problem worker and how to effectively manage this situation. This training is the core of the reasonable cause/suspicion testing of a program.

In addition to the supervisor training, education and involvement of the employees subject to testing is a key factor in a successful program. Adverse employee reaction is usually based on emotion and misinformation. Allowing employees a forum to openly discuss concerns contributes significantly to employee confidence in the program. When employees are involved in the process, the tendency is to view substance abuse testing as a safety program for them, rather than a policy implemented by management to them.
