Developing and day-to-day administration of a workplace drug and alcohol-testing program has evolved dramatically over the past twenty years.

In 1982, when our president Vern Jones entered the testing industry, there were no state or federal laws involved with workplace drug and alcohol-testing. Today, the DOT and other federal agencies have established a “gold standard” for establishing testing programs. In addition, there are literally hundreds of state laws and statues as well as numerous cities that regulate workplace testing.

In 1987, when the federal government initiated the federal testing regulations, they addressed only one specimen (urine), using certified laboratory based testing. Today, employers are utilizing a variety of specimens (urine, breath, saliva, oral fluid, fingernails, sweat, etc.) in a variety of testing formats (laboratory based, screening laboratories, Point-of-Collection tests, evidential on site products, etc.).

An ideal workplace testing program matches the expectations of the employees concerning accuracy, right to challenge test results, confidentiality, and privacy with the employers concerns with accuracy, reproducibility, defensibility, and cost effectiveness.
